The Hobbiton Map is part of the greater Minecraft Middle Earth project, in which several players are trying to recreate the world of Tolkiens Middle Earth in Minecraft. This map is showcasing the Hobbiton village which is part of the Shire in the novels, Hobbiton is where Bag End is located, the home of Frodo and Bilbo.
It does a fine case of showing how the greater project might end up looking, giving players a grand look at one of the more famous locations of the Shire, featuring several places known from the books as well as the movies, such as the aforementioned Bag End, as well as the festival area where Bilbo performs his “magic trick”.
It is pretty detailed, with every house being fully decorated, and the countryside having been entirely hand made, to give it that iconic Shire look. Impressive to say the least.
However, the area is as said just a small part of the greater map, which is currently only available on the projects server, so don’t expect a huge map from this showcase, you will soon find yourself on the edge of Hobbiton, facing endless flat plains.
It is still worth checking out though, just to see what the very talented people working at the project can do, and to get a feeling of how the Shire can look in-game. If the rest of the Middle Earth map is gonna look like this, we are surely in for a treat.
Should you want to check this map out, be sure to also download the Hobbiton Resource Pack, the official resource pack for the map, as it greatly improves the look and feel of the map, making it look as intended. Every screenshot seen in this post was also taken using that very resource pack, so just using vanilla Minecraft will make this map look somewhat different.
Hopefully they will release the full map when the project is done, but until then you can check out this small part of it, or The House of Beorn, another map showcasing part of the greater project.
Do note, that it can be hard to find in the map lising if you have a lot of maps installed, as the map is named “Middle Earth” in-game, not Hobbiton.
How to install the Hobbiton Map:
- Download the map.
- Go to your %appdata%/.minecraft folder.
- Open the “saves” folder.
- Unzip the map you downloaded, and put the unzipped folder into the saves folder.
- All set, you are now ready to explore this cool little part of Middle Earth by yourself!
Here is a small video showing both the map, as well as the Hobbiton Resource Pack:
