The Squeedometer Mod is a simple mod with one specific purpose in mind: to add a speedometer to your HUD, allowing you to track your speed and such stuff. While it can be used for anything you’d like, the creator is also the mind behind the Squake Mod, and this mod is generally meant to be used in conjunction with that mod.
The Squake Mod adds a specific kind of movement to the game, known from games such as Quake and Half-Life, and here is a brief history about that kind of movement:
Back then, games were often a lot more fast-paced, as people would often zoom around the map, blowing you up, then be gone before you could see where the rocket even came from. It didn’t start out this way at first, in the beginning people would just go around the maps, jump around as expected, and shoot people like they were “supposed” to. Eventually, people found out how to trick the engine by utilizing jumps and other movement in inventive ways, and then strafe jumping, bunny jumping, rocket jumping, and more were born. The games would never be the same again, as now you needed to learn these new tricks, or be left in the dirt.
This eventually evolved into maps and game-modes revolving around these concepts, maps where you had to traverse them and reach the end by using these methods, or do other things evolving movement and skill. The Surf maps known from Counter-Strike is also the kinds of maps these movement techniques spawned. You can still move like this in some games, but mostly the “realism-military-shooter”-wave has killed them. They might be on a resurgence though, as people seem to have gotten kinda tired the military-shooter trend. To learn more about these various forms of movement, take a look at this.
Important: this mod requires Minecraft Forge in order to function (remember to get the proper versions).
That’s the brief history behind the specific kinds of movement found in the old classics, and that’s the kind of movement the Squake Mod adds to the game. With this mod, you will be able to better track your movement and become better faster. It tracks how fast you traverse blocks, and how much your speed is increasing per jump. Pretty useful to easier locate whatever you’re doing wrong, and what you’re doing right.
If you’re getting this mod, you should definitively check out the Squake Movement Mod as well, as they’re supposed to be used together.
